Snapchat Guidance from the NSPCC

Snapchat is a popular messaging app that allows you to send images and videos to other users. These are known as ‘Snaps’. One of Snapchat’s unique selling points is that messages are normally only available for a short period of time and can only be viewed once. The platform is rated 13+ and should not be used by children younger than 13.

Instagram Guidance from the NSPCC

Instagram is rated 13+ and should not be used by children younger than 13. It is available to download for free on desktop and mobile. Instagram is predominately an image and video sharing app. Users can create a public or private profile where they choose to share their own content with their followers. Some children might create an account to just follow and interact with other people’s accounts, for example friends or celebrities.

TikTok - Is it safe for children?

TikTok is a video-sharing platform where you can watch and create videos, and livestream. The app has an age-rating of 13+. Users can browse different videos on TikTok via a personalised feed known as the ‘For You Page’. You can also search for content using topics or hashtags. The platform uses algorithms to show users different video content based on their interests and other videos they watch. This means that not everyone’s ‘For You Page’ is the same.

Sometimes platforms also test out different types of content with similar themes to see how we interact, so it knows what to show us in the future. TikTok can be a creative outlet for young people as it allows them to learn about video editing and discover new interests. However, it can be easy for children and young people to come across inappropriate content on the app.
