History at FJS

At Fleetville, we want every child to see themselves as a historian - curious, questioning and eager to understand how the past shapes the present. Our history curriculum is carefully designed to meet the National Curriculum expectations while reflecting the character of our school and community.

Through rich, well-sequenced units, children build both substantive knowledge (the key facts, people and events of the past) and disciplinary knowledge (the skills historians use to investigate, interpret and draw conclusions). Each year, pupils revisit and extend their understanding of chronology, cause and consequence, evidence and interpretation, and significance — deepening their grasp of how history is constructed and debated.

Across Key Stage 2, children study a diverse range of periods and civilisations - from Ancient Greece and the Romans to the Windrush Generation and the history of London during the Victorian period. Each unit is underpinned by clear knowledge and vocabulary goals, giving teachers precision in what to teach and assess. Strong cross-curricular links with English, geography and the arts allow children to make meaningful connections while maintaining the integrity of history as a subject.

We bring history to life through immersive experiences such as museum visits, re-enactments, artefact handling and drama, helping children to step into the shoes of people from the past. These experiences not only engage pupils but also encourage empathy, critical thinking and reflection on moral and ethical issues.

By the end of Key Stage 2, children will:
• Build secure knowledge of key periods, people and events in British and world history.
• Understand and use historical concepts and vocabulary with confidence.
• Ask perceptive questions, think critically and use evidence to develop arguments.
• Recognise how history connects to their own lives and the wider world.
• Develop a lasting curiosity about the past and a sense of how it shapes the future.
