Art at FJS

At Fleetville, we want every child to see themselves as an artist. Our art curriculum nurtures creativity, curiosity and confidence, giving children the skills to express their ideas visually and the knowledge to understand art in its wider cultural context. By the end of Key Stage 2, children will:

Develop practical skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, craft and design.
Build knowledge of significant artists, movements and traditions from across times and cultures.
Learn to evaluate and refine their work, using subject-specific language.
Gain the confidence to take creative risks, make personal choices and produce imaginative outcomes.
Understand that art connects to the wider world and has the power to express ideas, identity and perspective.

Curriculum design principles for Art

1.Sequenced Skills and Knowledge

Every unit builds step by step, with skills revisited and refined over time to ensure secure progression.

2.Ambitious and Inclusive

High expectations for all children, with scaffolds and adaptations so that every child can access, achieve and flourish.

3.Rooted in Culture and Context

Units are anchored in artists, traditions, and cultural examples so children see art as meaningful and relevant.

4.Art as Process and Outcome

Children learn to generate ideas, practise techniques, evaluate and refine - valuing both the journey and the final piece.

5.Developing Artistic Identity

Children are supported to see themselves as artists, making decisions, shaping their own style and connecting art to their lives.

6.Feedback and Reflection

Opportunities are built in for children to reflect, discuss and improve their work, developing independence and pride.
