Behaviour Curriculum

At Fleetville, we believe that excellent behaviour should be explicitly taught, modelled and practised rather than simply expected. Our Behaviour Curriculum - The Fleetville Way - helps children understand the behaviours, routines and relationships that allow everyone to feel safe, belong and learn successfully.

During Autumn Term One, children are explicitly taught our shared expectations through carefully planned lessons, assemblies, modelling and opportunities to practise. These expectations are then revisited and reinforced throughout the year.

Our approach is rooted in our school values, Learn with Courage and Live with Kindness, and in our three shared expectations: Ready, Respectful and Safe. We combine high expectations and positive relationships with clear boundaries. When behaviour falls below this, adults respond consistently, with consequences that are appropriate and proportionate, while helping children to reflect, repair relationships where necessary and make better choices in the future.

The Fleetville Way

We believe that positive behaviour develops through teaching and practice. Rather than assuming children already know what successful behaviour looks like in every situation, we make our expectations clear and teach them explicitly.

Children learn what it means to be Ready, Respectful and Safe in classrooms, around the school, at playtimes and lunchtimes, and when representing Fleetville beyond the school gates.

As children move through the school, we expect them to become increasingly independent in managing their behaviour, reflecting on their choices and understanding their impact on others.

How we teach behaviour

Our Behaviour Curriculum is  taught during Autumn Term One and revisited throughout the year according to the needs of individual classes and children.

Teachers will do the following:

Teach – make expectations clear and explain why they matter.
Model – demonstrate successful behaviours and explore examples and non-examples.
Practise – give children opportunities to rehearse routines and behaviours in real situations.
Apply – support children to use what they have learned independently.
Revisit – reteach and reinforce expectations whenever this is needed.

Children learn about areas including Ready, Respectful and Safe; Fleetville Listening; Fleetville Walking; Fleetville Talking; Fleetville Manners; playtime and lunchtime behaviour; preventing bullying; and routines that keep everyone safe.

Relationships and Restoration

Positive relationships are at the heart of our approach to behaviour, but this does not mean that inappropriate behaviour is overlooked. Children need clear expectations, consistent boundaries and predictable responses from adults.

When expectations are not met, staff respond consistently. Consequences are appropriate and proportionate to the behaviour, while taking account of individual circumstances and needs.

We also use restorative approaches to help children understand the impact of their behaviour. Where appropriate, children are supported to reflect on what happened, consider how others were affected, repair relationships and think about what they can do differently next time.

Our aim is not simply to stop unwanted behaviour in the moment, but to help children develop the understanding and self-regulation they need to make increasingly positive choices independently.

Supporting every child

We have high expectations for every child while recognising that children develop socially and emotionally at different rates and that some pupils may need additional teaching, modelling or support.

Where appropriate, staff adapt their approach and provide additional guidance to help children understand and meet our shared expectations. This allows us to maintain a consistent whole-school approach while responding thoughtfully to individual needs.

Behaviour Policies

Our Behaviour Curriculum works alongside our wider policies and procedures for promoting positive behaviour and keeping children safe.
