Interim Deputy Headteacher and SENCO Fran Andrew

Hello! I am Fran Andrew and I started working at Fleetville Junior School five years ago.  FJS is the third school I have taught at, having work in Hemel Hempstead and Welwyn Garden City previously.  Maths is my favourite subject to teach, particularly ‘tricky’ areas such as algebra and percentages.  I also love reading and I’m always keen to have books recommended to me.

I am inspired by a wide range of people, but, having spent the summer watching the Olympics and Paralympics, it is a range of sports people that come to mind.  Athletes like Laura Kenny, who was born with a collapsed lung, and Dame Sarah Storey, who was born without a functioning left hand, really show how determination and hard work can help you achieve anything, despite any setbacks you may face.

To me, kindness takes all sorts of forms.  It can involve simple things like smiling at someone or saying good morning to more complicated ones such as considering the needs of others before your own; however, the key part of kindness is that it makes the person being kind feel as good as the person who is receiving the kind actions, gestures or words.

One of my proudest school achievements was when my Year 6 netball team won the Welwyn Hatfield Netball Sevens competition - I am hoping that I will be able to add some netball silver wear to the trophy cabinet at Fleetville too! Outside of school, my biggest achievement was raising over £1,000 for charity by running a half marathon.  As the event took place in March, I had to train through the horrible winter months. It took a lot of hard work and dedication, but as the donations crept over the £1,000 mark whilst I was running the event certainly made it all worthwhile.
