French is taught for half an hour a week in each year group with opportunities for consolidation throughout the week.

Children learn the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing with emphasis initially on speaking and listening.

Children learn through games, songs and materials from the Tout Le Monde programme of learning.

Progress in each of the four skills is measured against the Languages Ladder, a national scheme to measure progress in languages. Primary age children are expected to be achieving between levels 1 and 3 in each of the four skills by the end of Year 6.
